The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary covers about 4,954 sq km of the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, a vast salt flat with scrub islands, called bets, and seasonal wetlands. It is the only place in the world where the Indian wild ass, or khur, lives in the wild. Nilgai, blackbuck, Indian wolves and desert foxes are also seen, and in winter the wetlands fill with flamingos, cranes and pelicans.

Safaris need a Forest Department permit and a guide; the Range Forest Office is at Bajana, and most resorts in Dasada, Bajana and Zainabad arrange the permit and jeep. The sanctuary is closed during the monsoon, when the Rann floods, and reopens in October.

  • How to Reach: Ahmedabad has the nearest major airport and railway station. Drive to Dasada, Bajana or Zainabad on the edge of the Rann, where safaris begin.
