Chopta is a roadside meadow at about 2,680 metres inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, with camps and dhabas rather than a town. The open grass, oak, and rhododendron are the reason people stay in Chopta even on rest days between temple walks. Spring brings red rhododendron bloom and good birding, including Himalayan monal. Evening light on Chaukhamba and Trishul is best from the meadow edge above the road.
