The Double Decker Living Root Bridge near Nongriat village is a two tiered structure grown by guiding the aerial roots of rubber trees across a river, a technique the Khasi people have refined over centuries. Some root bridges in the region have lasted more than 500 years, and this one remains in daily use by villagers. Reaching it involves a steep descent and climb of over 3000 steps through forest, making it as much a trekking experience as a sightseeing stop. Swimming pools along the route offer a chance to rest midway.
