The Ganga does not begin at Varanasi, nor at Haridwar. She begins here, at 3,415 metres, where the Bhagirathi River emerges cold and silver from the Himalayan glaciers and rushes past the temple dedicated to the goddess who answered a king's thousand-year prayer.

Gangotri is the second stop on the traditional Char Dham Yatra circuit, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and marks the site where, according to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva released the mighty river from his locks, and King Bhagirath's devotion brought her to earth. This is why the river is called Bhagirathi at its source: an eternal tribute to his penance.

What makes Gangotri distinct from Yamunotri and Kedarnath is simple: you can drive here. The temple sits directly in Gangotri town, accessible by motorable road from Uttarkashi. There is no mandatory trek. This makes it the most accessible of the four mountain dhams for elderly pilgrims and families with young children.

On the opening day, the ceremony begins with a divine bath of the idol of Goddess Ganga in the Bhagirathi River, followed by a sacred abhishek with milk, honey, and curd. A flag bearing the image of Goddess Ganga is hoisted on the temple, and a grand Ganga aarti is performed on the riverbank at dusk. It is one of the most spiritually charged moments of the entire Char Dham calendar.

Places to Visit Near Gangotri

Gaumukh Glacier (19 km from Gangotri): The actual glacial source of the Bhagirathi river, shaped like a cow's mouth. A two-day trek (requires separate permit) for those who wish to see the true origin of the Ganga. Spectacular, remote, and deeply moving.

Harsil Valley (25 km before Gangotri): A stunning Himalayan valley on the banks of the Bhagirathi, surrounded by apple orchards and Himalayan cedars. Many pilgrims break their journey here for a night, quieter and cooler than Gangotri town during peak season.

Bhairon Ghati: A short walk from Gangotri where the Jalandhari River meets the Bhagirathi. The temple of Bhairon Baba here is believed to guard the entire valley.
