Norbugang Chorten

Coronation site of Sikkim''s first king, dating to 1642.

Norbugang Chorten marks the spot where three Tibetan lamas crowned Phuntsog Namgyal as Sikkim's first Chogyal in 1642, an event of major historical weight. A stone throne and a chorten built after the ceremony still stand within a small forested park at the site. Legend holds that considerable wealth was buried beneath the structure by attendees at the coronation. It remains one of the most historically significant landmarks in Yuksom and a common stop on heritage walks.
