Edakkal Caves

Neolithic rock shelter with ancient carvings, reached by a steep climb.

Edakkal Caves occupy a naturally split boulder atop Ambukutty Mala, holding rock carvings that date back as far as 6000 BCE and rank among South India's most significant prehistoric art sites. Reaching the caves involves a climb of around 300 steps, rewarded with both the ancient petroglyphs and sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. Figures of humans, animals and undeciphered script cover the interior walls, offering a rare direct link to the region's earliest known human settlements.
