Kusum Sarovar is a beautiful octagonal stepped reservoir near Govardhan, about 26 km from Mathura, historically associated with Radha and Krishna's pastimes. The sarovar (lake) is surrounded by red sandstone steps and ghats decorated with 108 pavilions and memorial cenotaphs of the Bharatpur rulers who had it renovated in the 18th century. The monuments and pavilions around the lake are dedicated to various Vaishnava saints. Kusum Sarovar is named after Kusuma, one of Radha's closest companions, and the surrounding forest is believed to be one of the Braj forests where Krishna and Radha met. The setting is especially beautiful at sunrise.
