Vellore Fort

Sixteenth century Vijayanagara fort with granite ramparts, a wide moat, and a temple, mosque, and church inside.

Vellore Fort rises at the heart of the city and was built in the sixteenth century by the Vijayanagara rulers Chinna Bommi Nayaka and Thimma Reddy Nayaka. Spread across more than a hundred acres, the fort is encircled by a deep moat that once held thousands of crocodiles for defense. It uniquely houses a Hindu temple, a mosque, and a Christian church within its walls, and it witnessed the 1806 Vellore Mutiny, one of the earliest uprisings against British rule in India.
