Jalakandeswarar Temple

16th century Shiva temple inside Vellore Fort, known for its Vijayanagara stone carvings and pillared halls.

Jalakandeswarar Temple sits inside Vellore Fort and honors Lord Shiva as Jalakandeswarar, a name that reflects the water once found beneath the original lingam. Built in the mid sixteenth century under the Vijayanagara rulers, the temple showcases detailed stone carvings, a towering gopuram, and a Kalyana Mandapam whose monolithic pillars depict dragons, horses, and yalis. Small shrines to Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Akilandeswari sit within the same complex, and the temple remains an active place of worship today.
