Papanasam Beach, more commonly called Varkala Beach, stretches beneath the town's signature red cliffs and holds deep religious significance as a spot believed to cleanse visitors of sin through a ritual dip. Hindu families conduct last rites and ancestral prayers on its sands, alongside travellers swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. Its dual identity as both sacred site and beach destination sets it apart from Kerala's more purely recreational coastlines.
