Janardhana Swamy Temple perches on the cliffs above Varkala Beach, dedicated to Vishnu and estimated to be around 2000 years old. Often referred to as Dakshin Kashi, or the Varanasi of the South, the temple has drawn Hindu pilgrims since at least the 12th century. A notable bell inside was donated by the captain of a Dutch vessel wrecked near Varkala, adding an unusual layer to the temple's long history.
