Kaal Bhairav Temple

The presiding guardian deity temple of Varanasi, dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, a fierce form of Shiva, unique for its tradition of offering alcohol as prasad.

Kaal Bhairav Temple in Varanasi is dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, the fierce time-destroying manifestation of Lord Shiva who serves as the guardian deity of Kashi. According to Hindu belief, no one can reside in Varanasi without the permission of Kaal Bhairav, and pilgrims traditionally visit this temple before completing their Kashi circuit. The temple is renowned for its unique tradition of offering alcohol as prasad to the deity, a practice found at very few temples in India. The temple is believed to be very ancient, with references in the Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana. The narrow lanes of the old city leading to the shrine are lined with shops selling marigold garlands, coconuts, and bottles of country liquor as offerings. The atmosphere during Bhairav Ashtami, the principal festival of the temple, is one of the most intense spiritual experiences in Varanasi.
