Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery within Sayaji Baug was established in 1894 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III for the education of his subjects and contains artefacts personally curated by the Maharaja. The museum's highlights include 109 Mughal-era miniature paintings, a Persian illustrated Mahabharata commissioned by Emperor Akbar, Gandharan sculptures, an Egyptian room with a genuine mummy, a blue whale skeleton, coins and decorative arts. The Picture Gallery houses European oil paintings and works by Raja Ravi Varma alongside Himalayan paintings by Nicholas Roerich.
