Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the most sacred temples in Hinduism. It is unique among the Jyotirlingas for being the only one that is south-facing (dakshinamurti), a characteristic considered especially powerful in tantric tradition. The presiding deity is believed to be swayambhu, meaning self-manifested rather than consecrated by human hands. The temple is most famous for the Bhasma Aarti performed before dawn each day, in which the deity is ritually bathed and anointed with ash from funeral pyres, a practice believed to represent the cycle of creation and destruction. This aarti draws pilgrims from across India who queue through the night for the privilege of witnessing it. The current temple structure was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Maratha ruler Ranoji Shinde after the original was destroyed by Iltutmish in the 13th century. Ujjain itself is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and hosts the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) every twelve years, during which the Mahakaleshwar complex becomes the focal point of millions of pilgrims.
