St Mary's Island

A cluster of islands with rare hexagonal basalt rock formations, reached by boat from Malpe.

St Mary's Island consists of small islands off the coast near Malpe, distinguished by hexagonal basalt rock columns formed through ancient volcanic activity, a geological feature rare in India. Local lore holds that Vasco da Gama landed here en route to Kerala. Visitors reach the island by a short ferry ride from Malpe and can explore the rock formations alongside clear water and quiet beaches, making it one of the more distinctive natural attractions on Karnataka's coast.
