Sri Krishna Matha stands as Udupi's spiritual and cultural anchor, founded by philosopher saint Madhvacharya in the thirteenth century. Devotees view the deity through the Kanakana Kindi, a silver plated window, a tradition rooted in a devotee legend. The temple runs under the unique Paryaya system, where eight monasteries rotate management every two years. Surrounding the temple are the eight mathas along Car Street, along with communal dining halls that continue Udupi's legendary vegetarian food culture.
