Periyar Tiger Reserve spreads across nearly eight hundred square kilometers of the Western Ghats, protecting one of India's most important tiger and elephant habitats. Dense evergreen forest surrounds an artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam, creating a landscape where boat safaris, jungle treks, and bamboo rafting reveal sightings of elephants, bison, and rare birds. The reserve anchors Thekkady's entire tourism economy and remains one of the few sanctuaries where wildlife can be watched safely from the water.
