Mullaperiyar Dam

A colonial era dam that created Periyar Lake, valued for its views of the Western Ghats.

Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed by the British in 1895 across the Periyar River, standing over fifty meters tall and forming the lake that now defines Thekkady's landscape. Visitors walk along the dam wall for wide views over the reservoir and the forested hills beyond. The dam continues to supply water for irrigation and power generation across the border in Tamil Nadu, making it as functionally significant as it is scenic. Its role predates the tiger reserve that grew around it.
