Ghodbunder Fort

Ghodbunder Fort occupies a hilltop above the Ulhas River, roughly 17 kilometers from central Thane, and takes its name from the Portuguese horse trade once conducted here. Built around 1550 and fortified further through 1730, the site passed from Portuguese to Maratha control after a fierce battle in 1737, then later to the East India Company. Ruined bastions, a weathered Portuguese church, and old mansion walls remain under Archaeological Survey of India protection, drawing history enthusiasts and photographers for the hilltop views over Thane Creek.
