Bardiya National Park covers 968 sq km of sal forest, grassland and river land in western Nepal, bounded by the Karnali river and crossed by the Babai. Set up in 1988, it is the largest undisturbed park in Nepal's Terai. Tigers, Indian rhinos, elephants, swamp deer and Gangetic dolphins live here, along with gharials and mugger crocodiles in the rivers.

Thakurdwara is the park headquarters and main entry. Jeep safaris and walks need a park entry permit and a licensed guide, usually arranged through lodges in Thakurdwara.

  • How to Reach: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then drive about 95 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, to Thakurdwara.
