Orang National Park lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam. Often called a smaller Kaziranga, its 79 sq km of grassland, wetland and riverine forest became a sanctuary in 1985 and a national park in 1999. It holds greater one horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, elephants, tigers and the rare pygmy hog, along with many water birds.
Orang sees far fewer visitors than Kaziranga, and safaris are arranged through the Assam Forest Department. Check the season, permits and timings before you travel.
- How to Reach: Orang lies west of Tezpur on the north bank of the Brahmaputra; Tezpur has the nearest airport and Guwahati is about 140 km away.
