Urgelling Gompa, established in 1487 AD, holds immense significance in Tibetan Buddhism as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, who was born here in 1683. The monastery is small and intimate compared to the grand Tawang Monastery nearby, and retains a quiet, deeply sacred atmosphere. A small museum inside displays photographs and artifacts related to the 6th Dalai Lama's life. The gompa is set amidst terraced fields and traditional Monpa village houses, giving it a peaceful rural setting. It is a short drive or moderate walk from Tawang town and is usually visited as part of a Tawang town circuit.
