Madhuri Lake

A stunning glacial lake at 3,700 metres near the Indo-China border, famous for its emerald waters ringed by snow peaks and windswept yak meadows.

Madhuri Lake, locally known as Sangetsar or Shonga-Tser Lake, sits at about 3,700 metres on the route from Tawang towards Bumla Pass near the Line of Actual Control with China. The lake gained its popular nickname after a song from the Bollywood film Koyla starring Madhuri Dixit was filmed here. The setting is extraordinary, with the emerald green lake surrounded by barren hills, grazing yaks, and snow-capped peaks in every direction. The lake and surroundings are maintained by the Indian Army and there is a canteen nearby. The journey to the lake passes through dramatic high-altitude terrain. A special permit from the Deputy Commissioner of Tawang and the Indian Army is required to visit.
