Bumla Pass sits at approximately 4,600 metres on the Line of Actual Control between India and China, about 37 km from Tawang town. The pass holds significant historical importance as it was the route used by the 14th Dalai Lama to enter India in 1959 after fleeing Tibet. It was also a key area of conflict during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Today the pass is guarded by the Indian Army and visitors require a special permit from both the Deputy Commissioner of Tawang and the Indian Army. The journey to the pass passes through Madhuri Lake and several other high-altitude lakes. Photography is restricted at the pass itself. The Indian Army runs a canteen at the pass that is open to visitors.
