Akka Mahadevi Caves

Natural rock-cut caves reached by boat, named for a 12th-century saint-poet.

Akka Mahadevi Caves are reached by a boat ride on the Krishna River from Pathala Ganga, followed by a short trek into the rock formations. Named after the renowned twelfth-century Kannada poet-saint who is believed to have meditated here, the caves grow progressively darker as visitors move inward, ending at a naturally formed Shiva lingam deep within the rock. The boat journey itself, gliding past forested banks and hillsides, is as much a draw as the cave.
