Uraiyur Vekkaliamman Temple at Woraiyur, about 7 km from Srirangam, is dedicated to Goddess Vekkaliamman, a fierce form of Durga. The temple is notable for its unique open-roofed sanctum: according to legend, the Goddess herself declared she would have no roof over her head until every human on earth had shelter. The site has deep Chola connections as Uraiyur was the ancient capital of the Early Cholas. Tuesdays and Fridays see the heaviest pilgrim footfall. The temple is one of the older Shakti shrines in the Trichy-Srirangam religious circuit.
