Rock Fort Temple

Twin temples atop an ancient 83-metre granite rock in Trichy with sweeping views of the city and the Srirangam island from the summit.

Rock Fort Temple, locally known as Ucchi Pillayar Kovil, comprises shrines carved into and atop an 83-metre granite rock on the banks of the Kaveri in Trichy, about 4 km from Srirangam. The rock is believed to be among the oldest geological formations in the world, predating the Himalayas. The upper shrine is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and reached by 437 rock-cut steps; the lower Thayumanaswami Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. From the summit, the entire Srirangam island, the Kaveri's river loops, and the city of Trichy spread panoramically below.
