The Kalyani pond sits at the heart of Shravanabelagola, its name literally meaning white pond in Kannada, from which the town takes its identity. Surrounded by traditional red tiled houses, the pond offers one of the classic photographic views of the town with Vindhyagiri rising behind it. Pilgrims traditionally pause here before beginning the climb to the Gommateshwara statue. The reflection of the hill in still water is especially striking early in the morning.
