Wards Lake

Historic city lake with boating and gardens.

Wards Lake, locally called Nan Polok, is a beloved horseshoe-shaped artificial lake at the heart of Shillong, designed by Fitzwilliam Thomas Pollok and built in 1894 under the direction of Chief Commissioner Sir William Ward. Surrounded by a botanical garden with cobblestoned paths, ornamental flower beds, and century-old trees, it features a charming wooden bridge spanning the centre of the lake. Pedal boating, a resident flock of geese and ducks, and a lakeside cafeteria make it one of the city's most popular leisure spots for all ages.
