Umiam Lake

Large blue lake, also called Barapani, with boating.

Umiam Lake, locally called Barapani or 'big water,' is a scenic man-made reservoir created in the early 1960s by damming the Umiam River as part of Meghalaya's first hydroelectric project. Spreading across roughly 220 sq km of catchment area, 15 km north of Shillong on the Guwahati highway, it is ringed by coniferous hills and Gulmohar trees. The water sports complex offers kayaking, speed boating, water scooters, and yachting. A boathouse on Lumpongden Island in the middle of the reservoir can be booked for overnight stays.
