Khasi Hills form the central heartland of Meghalaya, an ancient plateau rising to 1,965 metres at Shillong Peak and sheltering one of the world's most distinct indigenous cultures. The region is home to the Khasi people, who follow a rare matrilineal tradition, and encompasses Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, among the wettest places on earth. Sacred forests, living root bridges, megalithic monoliths, cascading waterfalls, and the capital city of Shillong all lie within this spectacularly biodiverse highland terrain.
