Elephant Falls, known locally in Khasi as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew or 'the three-step waterfall,' cascades in three distinct tiers through fern-draped rocks about 12 km from Shillong. The British colonial name comes from an elephant-shaped rock formation that was destroyed in the 1897 earthquake. Well-maintained staircases and viewing platforms lead to each tier, making it accessible for most visitors. The third and tallest tier is the most dramatic, especially during and after monsoon.
