Uttarayan is the name of the residential complex at Santiniketan where Rabindranath Tagore lived and worked for much of his creative life. The complex contains five distinctive buildings — Udayan, Konark, Shyamali, Punascha, and Udichi — each with its own architectural character, all designed in the unique fusion of Indian regional styles that Tagore championed. The buildings are constructed using terracotta, wood, tiles, and natural materials. Tagore designed these homes himself as experiments in vernacular architecture responding to the local Birbhum landscape and climate. Uttarayan is now a heritage precinct within the Visva-Bharati University campus.
