Teen Pahar

Three rocky outcrops near Santiniketan's campus that inspired Tagore's paintings and poetry, popular for walks in the distinctive red laterite landscape he loved.

Teen Pahar in Santiniketan is a rocky hill feature — three rocky outcrops (pahar means hill/rock in Bengali) — in the landscape near the Visva-Bharati campus that carries significance in Rabindranath Tagore's creative life. Tagore was deeply influenced by the stark beauty of the red laterite landscape of Birbhum, and the rocky outcrops and open moorland (known as khoai) around Santiniketan appear repeatedly in his paintings and poetry. Teen Pahar is a popular destination for quiet walks and nature contemplation in the Tagorean tradition of learning from the natural world.
