Sarnath Archaeological Museum is the oldest site museum in India, established in 1910 and located within the Sarnath excavation complex. The museum houses the world-famous Lion Capital of Ashoka — the original 3rd century BCE carved capital from Ashoka's pillar at Sarnath, which was adopted as India's National Emblem. Other highlights include the beautiful Gupta-period standing Buddha statue considered one of the finest sculptures in Indian art, Brahmi inscriptions, pottery, and a large collection of Buddhist sculptures and relics spanning centuries. The museum is essential visiting alongside the Dhamek Stupa and is the custodian of some of India's greatest artistic treasures.
