Mulagandha Kuti Vihar

A 1931 Buddhist temple at Sarnath adorned with magnificent Japanese frescoes of the Buddha's life, housing genuine relics and a Bodhi tree sapling.

Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is a modern Buddhist temple at Sarnath built by the Maha Bodhi Society of India and inaugurated in 1931. The temple is decorated with magnificent frescoes painted by the Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. The frescoes cover the interior walls with remarkable detail and artistic skill, making the temple interior one of the most beautiful in India's Buddhist circuit. The temple also houses relics of the Buddha obtained from Sri Lanka. A sacred Bodhi tree grown from a sapling from the original Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya stands in the temple's garden.
