Satdhara Stupas, about 8 km from Sanchi on a plateau above the Betwa River, form one of the largest Buddhist complexes in central India. The main stupa at Satdhara is wider in diameter than the Great Stupa at Sanchi and dates to the Ashokan period, though it is much less well known. The site has minimal infrastructure and few visitors, giving it a remote and atmospheric quality unlike the curated monuments at Sanchi. Reliquaries from the site were excavated by British archaeologists in the 19th century and the relics eventually returned to India. A riverside walk from the site adds to its appeal.
