Sanchi Archaeological Museum on the hill was established in 1919 by Sir John Marshall and is among the most important site museums in India. Its four galleries display a concentrated collection of sculptures, architectural fragments and inscriptions recovered from the complex, including the famous Ashoka Lion Capital removed from the pillar for protection, yakshi bracket figures from the gateways, Buddhist relics in caskets, and a chronological sequence of Sanchi's sculptural traditions from the Mauryan to the medieval period. The museum is essential context for reading the monuments.
