Ralang Monastery stands among Sikkim's most revered Kagyu sect institutions, built in 1768 by the fourth Chogyal to mark a pilgrimage to Tibet. Legend holds that grains of rice thrown during a blessing ceremony landed here, prompting its construction. The monastery holds an extensive collection of thangkas and murals reflecting the depth of Tibetan Buddhist art. Roughly 13 kilometers from Ravangla, it is accessible only by trekking, which adds to its untouched, contemplative character. The annual Pang Lhabsol festival, honoring Mount Kanchenjunga, draws crowds each year.
