Doling Monastery (Dorling Gompa)

A hillside Nyingma sect monastery in Barfung village, founded in 1718 and rebuilt after repeated earthquakes.

Doling Monastery, also called Dorling Gompa, occupies a small hillock in Barfung village roughly 6 kilometers from Ravangla. Lama Rigdzin Longyang founded it in 1718 following his family's arrival from Tibet during a Mongol invasion, and it follows the Nyingmapa or Red Hat sect. Earthquakes have damaged the structure repeatedly over the centuries, leading to rebuilding in 1840, 1920, and 1984. Descendants of the founding lama continue to maintain the monastery today. Raised on a platform, it offers wide views of surrounding forests and peaks.
