Ranchi Lake, also called Bada Talab, was dug out in 1842 by a British colonel to secure the city's water supply and now spans more than 50 acres at the base of Ranchi Hill. Boating remains the main draw, offering a peaceful escape from the surrounding city traffic and a good vantage point for evening light over the water. Walking paths line parts of the shore, making it popular for both morning exercise and relaxed evening visits.
