Pamban Bridge

India's first sea bridge, connecting Rameswaram island to the mainland with a dramatic lift span.

Pamban Bridge, also known as the Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge, was India's first sea bridge, stretching across the Palk Strait on more than a hundred pillars. Its double-leaf bascule section can be raised to let ships pass underneath, a mechanism still in active use today. Trains crossing the parallel rail bridge offer one of South India's most scenic rides, with open water on both sides, making it a favorite stop for visitors entering or leaving the island.
