Gandhamadhana Parvatham

The island's highest point, marking where Hanuman is said to have leaped toward Lanka.

Gandhamadhana Parvatham crowns Rameswaram island as its highest point, a small hilltop shrine reached by a short climb from the main town. Legend holds this is where Hanuman stood to spot Lanka before making his great leap across the sea in search of Sita, and the temple here preserves what devotees believe are his footprints in stone. From the top, visitors get sweeping views of the island, the surrounding waters, and, on clear days, the distant coastline of Sri Lanka.
