Dhanushkodi

An abandoned "ghost town" at the island's tip, devastated by a 1964 cyclone.

Dhanushkodi sits at the very tip of Rameswaram island, where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean across a narrow stretch of sand. Once a thriving port town, it was almost entirely destroyed by a powerful cyclone in 1964, and the ruins of its railway station, church, and homes still stand half-buried in sand today. The eerie, windswept landscape combined with its tragic history make Dhanushkodi one of Rameswaram's most memorable stops, especially toward sunset.
