Agnitheertham sits on the shore directly facing Ramanathaswamy Temple and ranks as the most significant of Rameswaram's 64 sacred theerthams. According to tradition, Rama worshipped Shiva here to cleanse himself after the war with Ravana, and pilgrims still take a ritual dip in these waters before entering the temple for darshan. The name translates roughly to fire water, tied to beliefs about its purifying power. Sunrise here is considered beautiful, drawing both devotees and early-morning photographers to the open beach.
