Rajsamand Lake stretches across the heart of the town. Maharana Raj Singh I of Mewar built it between 1662 and 1676 as a famine relief project, damming the Gomati, Kelwa and Tali rivers. Its white marble embankment, called Nauchowki, has carved steps, cenotaphs and nine ornate pavilions, and carries the Raj Prashasti, a Sanskrit history of Mewar carved on 25 stone slabs and one of the longest inscriptions of its kind in India. Evenings bring a golden light across the water that draws residents for walks along the promenade, and seasonal boating adds to the appeal of this expansive, historic reservoir.
