Bimbisar's Jail

Hilltop ruins where King Bimbisara was imprisoned by his son, chosen for its view of Buddha''s sermons.

Bimbisar's Jail sits on raised ground within Rajgir's ancient fortifications and marks the spot where King Ajatashatru is said to have imprisoned his father Bimbisara after seizing the throne. Bimbisara, a devoted follower of Buddha, reportedly chose to spend his final days in this particular cell because it offered a direct line of sight to Griddhakuta Peak, where Buddha delivered his morning sermons. Little remains beyond scattered stone walls and pillar bases, but the story behind the ruins gives the site more weight than its modest remains suggest.
