Pushkar Lake is considered one of the five sacred dhams in Hinduism and is called Tirtha Raj, the king of all pilgrimages. According to mythology, the lake appeared when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower here. The semi-circular lake is about 8 to 10 metres deep and is ringed by 52 bathing ghats where pilgrims come to take a holy dip, perform rituals, and offer prayers. Over 400 temples line the surrounding area. The ghats are most atmospheric at sunrise and during the evening aarti when oil lamps are floated on the water. The lake becomes the central stage for the famous Pushkar Camel Fair held every November during Kartik Purnima, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors.
