The highest fort in Pune district at about 1,400 m, the first fort Shivaji captured around 1646, climbed from Velhe village.

Torna, also called Prachandagad, is the highest hill fort in Pune district at about 1,400 m. Shivaji captured it around 1646, at the age of 16, and it is remembered as the first fort he took. The trail from Velhe village climbs steadily, with a few rocky patches near the top, to the Binny Darwaza gateway and the Menghai Devi temple. On top, the long ridge runs out to the Zunjar Machi and Budhla Machi spurs, with views across to Rajgad. The trail is slippery in the monsoon, and the top can be very windy.

  • How to Reach: About 60 km south west of Pune via Nasrapur and Velhe. The trek from Velhe takes about 2 to 3 hours up; ST buses run from Swargate to Velhe.
