Sinhagad, earlier called Kondhana, stands on a steep ridge of the Sahyadri south west of Pune and is the city's favourite weekend outing. It is best known for the night assault of 1670, when Tanaji Malusare scaled the cliffs to take the fort for Shivaji and was killed in the fight; a memorial to him stands on top, near the samadhi of Rajaram, Shivaji's younger son. The Pune Darwaza and Kalyan Darwaza gateways, ramparts and water tanks are the main things to walk to, and the views stretch over the Khadakwasla reservoir and the hills towards Rajgad and Torna. Stalls at the top serve pithla bhakri, kanda bhaji and curd. On crowded weekends and holidays in 2026 the forest department has capped the number of vehicles and visitors allowed up, so arrive early.

- Hours: Daytime visits. Forest department fee on the ghat road: ₹50 per two wheeler, ₹100 per car. Vehicle and visitor numbers are capped on crowded days; go early, especially in the monsoon.
- How to Reach: About 30 km south west of central Pune via Khadakwasla. Drive or take a shared jeep up the ghat road to the parking near the top, or walk the trail from the foot of the hill at Atkarwadi (about 2.7 km one way, roughly 600 m of climb).
